The Importance of Journaling

To help you learn the names, symbols, meanings, and orientations of the runes, I suggest you add journaling as an important part of your rune study. Journaling helps you and your practice in many beneficial ways. It’s a chronicle of your personal journey and you will use your journals in future studies.

You can start your journals right now, as you read this book. You don’t have to know anything about the runes or even magickal practice. Just start documenting your journey.

I have several journals, notebooks, and sketchpads and often refer to them. Sometimes we get answers before we need them. Guidance may take time to come to fruition and having a record of past readings or drawings can lend important insight.

Find a journaling system that works for you. If you are a person that loves to write and organize your thoughts, then this will please you. If you don’t like writing, this will be a magnificent growing experience.

I prefer and suggest having physical journals and sketchbooks, the act of writing something by hand is part of ritual magick and helps in the learning process. You are welcome to incorporate any digital journals as well. The end point being that you keep as detailed of a journal as you can and use whatever method you are comfortable with to do it.

Treat writing journal entries as a ritual in itself. Make time for journaling in your day. Calm and cleanse beforehand and set a place to write with no pressure. Enjoy the process of putting your thoughts down on paper. It doesn’t matter if you think you have bad penmanship or can’t draw. That’s not the point. The point is to do it every day or as close as you can to every day. Just putting something down shows a commitment and keeps the mind asking for more. And the more you journal, the better you’ll get at it. Soon you will be proud to see the collection of information you record as you progress.

The following are a few types of journals I recommend having:

Daily rune pull journal - Keep track of your daily pulls and what happens through the day.

Galdor journal - This is a journal to track your study progress and experiences.

Spellwork journal - Log the spells, ceremonies, and rituals you do and how you do them.

Sketchbook - A secret sketchbook to draw thoughts, visions, ideas, and rune study.

Rune reading journal - A journal to record rune readings for study later.

Ideas and goals journal - Never lose an idea or goal. Writing them down helps the intention.

Dream journal - Messages can come through dreams. Keep this next to your bed.
